Movie Review: Les Miserables

In 19th-century France, Jean Valjean, who for decades has been hunted by the ruthless policeman Javert after he breaks parole, agrees to care for factory worker Fantine's daughter, Cosette. The fateful decision changes their lives forever.

Les Misérables (2012) on IMDb

An opera rock very well set-up by Tom Hooper and with a great cast, all of them award deserves for their singing roles, I was even surprised by Russell Crowe. Ann Hathaway and Hugh Jackman just astonishing. The Young Cast in the movie also great.

This movie is also all about Production Design, the job behind the scenes also excellent. I really don't have anything to complaint, just a little extensive, but its a very Emotional Musical.

Score: 9.35/10

Movie Review: Lincoln

Lincoln (2012) on IMDb

With Steven Spielberg Quality symbol attached, you know you will have a great time watching a remarkable achievement on Production with the right ingredients and actor/actresses, and considerably more when is come to  tell the story of one of the most important persons in US History.

Lincoln has all the good elements you are gonna find on a Spielberg movie. A very good Production Design, Cinematography and technical aspects, and at the same time having a movie with powerful drama and remarkable characters.

I wont say everybody is ok in the movie, but I have to highlights several performances that brings that right level you need for a History Movie. Mention of this; Tommy-Lee Jones, Sally Field, Jackie Earley Haley, David Stratairn, Joseph Gordon Levitt, and of course Daniel Day-Lewis.

A movie about characters and roles, politics, and to tell one of the most important moments about in History in USA. Might be turn a little long and tedious if you are expecting more an Action War Movie. Is more about all Politic 'actions' taken by Lincoln and his group to pass the 13 Amendment. This makes the movie to focus more into the characters and the good performances that everybody could bring. Daniel Day-Lewis again, is there a movie where he doesn't offer a very good performance? (My Left Food, Gangs of New York, There Will Be Blood...)

However due to the importance of the story of the movie, and the fact that is about one of the most important moment in History of USA, the movie couldn't escape to the controversy of be in the Focus of attention of History Analysis about how trust to the real facts is the movie...

When the Speaker of the House does the Congressional roll call, in alphabetical order by state, he starts with Connecticut. He should've started with California, which was admitted to the union in 1850 and had 3 representatives in the 38th congress (March 1863 to March 1865)....
Two Connecticut Congressmen vote against the 13th Amendment during the movie, however, all four Connecticut Congressman actually supported and voted in favor of the Amendment in 1865....

The controversy about the 2 Connecticut Congressmen has been the point of attention, since the moment of the voting for the approval of the 13th amendment is a key element of the movie, and saying that, this should be accurate.

HARTFORD, Conn. — As Rep. Joe Courtney watched the Oscar-nominated "Lincoln" over the weekend, something didn't seem right to him.
He said Tuesday he was shocked that the film, about President Abraham Lincoln's political struggle to abolish slavery, includes a scene in which two Connecticut congressmen vote against the 13th amendment to the Constitution, outlawing slavery.
"Wow. Connecticut voted against abolishing slavery?'" Courtney recalled hearing audience members ask. "I obviously had the same reaction. It was really bugging me."
He said a cursory Internet search confirmed his suspicions that the movie, directed by Steven Spielberg, was historically inaccurate. He asked the Congressional Research Service to investigate, and it reported that all four Connecticut congressmen backed the amendment in a January 1865 vote.'Lincoln' & Connecticut: Congressman Says Lauded Movie Fudged Key Fact
AP on The Huffington Post (02/05/2013) [http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/06/lincoln-connecticut-congressman-fact-wrong_n_2629783.htm]

Of course I'm not looking to destroy the movie because of this incident, but the movie is looking to be an Historic Film Document about Lincoln, the movie actually is, it's a movie Focus more in Politics and  Characters, not in War and Action... like All President's Men. A movie for History lovers and performances. Like Spielberg says in the video below "we want to show Lincoln the Person, not the Monument..."

Movie Review: Argo [or the Movie without Director]

A dramatization of the 1980 joint CIA-Canadian secret operation to extract six fugitive American diplomatic personnel out of revolutionary Iran.

Writers: (screenplay), (book)
Stars: , ,

Argo (2012) on IMDb

I have to start this saying that there's no logic to left Ben Affleck out of the race for the Oscar as Best Director, I mean is the Best Movie of the Year, all other Award Associations almost unanimously has been given the Movie the award as Best Movie.

It's Hollywood inside Hollywood. where CIA creates a fake movie to get into Iran Tony Mendez to help take out  6 Americans that manage to escape the US Embassy where  the Embassy were took by Iranian revolutionaries and 52 Americans were taken hostage for 444 Days .

The occupiers bound and blindfolded the embassy Marines and staff and paraded them in front of photographers. In the first couple of days, many of the embassy staff who had snuck out of the compound or not been there at the time of the takeover were rounded up by Islamists and returned as hostages.[39] Six American diplomats did however avoid capture and found refuge at the nearby Canadian and Swedish embassies in Tehran for three months (Canadian caper). A joint Canadian government–Central Intelligence Agency covert operation managed to smuggle them out of Iran using Canadian passports and a cover story disguising them as a Canadian film crew on January 28, 1980. Wikipedia: The Irani Hostage Crisis

Ben Affleck put the right pieces in the right place in the right time, so having them out of the Top 5 List of Directors is something that nobody understands. That's the reaction that pretty much everybody feels while watching the movie. Argo has also a great Cast, that work well together (that explain the SAG). John Goodman, Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin, Kyle Chandler, Victor Garber, Tate Donovan, Rory Cochrane, the same Ben Affleck are the reasons to watch this Film.

Great screenplay, great edition, acting, etc. Flawless.

Score: 10/10

Movie Review: Zero Dark Thirty [Cotroversy Movie Alert]

A chronicle of the decade-long hunt for al-Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden after the September 2001 attacks, and his death at the hands of the Navy S.E.A.L. Team 6 in May 2011.

Stars: , , Reda Kateb Kyle Chandler Harold Perrineau Édgar Ramírez  James Gandolfini

Zero Dark Thirty (2012) on IMDb

Speaking about controversial movies and Oscars. This one with a Political storyline involving the real story of the Hunt of Devil turned Person, and the commander of the worst Terrorist Attack and the meaning for United States and Citizens and Soldiers.... ...o yeah sure this movie have to have the word "Controversial" written all over the place.

There's a lot of criticism around the Torture Scenes in this movie... quoting myself on MovieReviews.com , and I'm might be 'Controversial'...

"Smart, not for Action Seekers"

"The torture scenes everybody's buzzing about are not the Focus of the movie, however when they are present they are brutal. Smart thriller that focus more in the plot and tell the story without being overwhelmed overbalanced or out of limits or cliche."
It is very well-known that tortures exist. The thing also is that the movie start straight with the torture scenes, after listening horror 911 phone calls during the attacks, while audience is looking a black screen. The reaction against the torture scenes were instantly and now several persons are putting on a Black List the name of Katherin Bigelow... c'mon seriously!

I think Bigelow did her Job here, the movie could be ended up a cliche, a stupid action-reaction movie to satisfy the Box Office... anyway despite the Controversy and everything, the Movie make his way to the top on the Block Office ;-).

Katherin Bigelow set the movie with the best doses of elements with a Subject that from start is already a huge controversyto plasm on a Movie: Osama Bin Laden and 911.

The technical aspects and Cinematography have also their good doses, without turning the movie in something difficult to watch for some viewers (i.e Traffic, Blair Witch Project, Cloverfield... you got the point).

Perfomamces are also a hit, nobody actually highlights like for an award (except for Jessica Chastain--- although James Gandolfini as C.I.A Director is awesome) anyway don't misunderstood my words, is because the movie is not pointed to highlight the characters or show a 'Hero' (this might be why the movie became Controversial), however Jessica Chastain works her way to bring all the attention of the Movie. Kyle Chandler is also somebody to name, he is also on Argo, and I think The Academy should honor him at least by having him as Presenter.

Due to the Movie being Controversial, I totally disregard it from the Oscars (no Controversial Movies win the Oscars --- (Brokeback Mountain JFK...) however I personally consider Zero Dark Thirty one of the Best Movies of 2012

A little long might be its only sin.

Score: 8.75/10

Movie Review: Life of Pi

A young man who survives a disaster at sea is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While cast away, he forms an unexpected connection with another survivor ... a fearsome Bengal tiger.

Writers: (screenplay), (novel)

  IMDB# 454876

Fantastic storytelling very well-set by Master Director Ang Lee. Oscar winner for for two of the Best Movies from 2000's Decade Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Brokeback Mountain brings now a Magistrate movie adaptation of Yann Martel Novel. With a clean and neat cinematography, edition, production design, visual effects, and Powerful Screen Adaption and performances.

The son of a Zoo Manager who get stranded in the middle of the Ocean with a wounded Zebra, a Hyena, an Orangutan and a Bengal Tiger (the best Animal Actor/Character that I've ever seen).

This movie is also another Cinematography Breaking  Masterpiece from Ang Lee, the only one capable of mold a Movie with the Best Combo of Visual Effects - Storyline - Narrative.
A fantastic journey from Ang Lee, with breakthrough Indian Actor Suraj Sharma.

Ang Lee who was  criticized in the Past for the set on screen and Visual Effects done for Hulk, now left everybody jaw-drop with the Best Use of 3D on a Movie. Ang Lee take all the advantage from the 3D (You have to watch it in 3D), at the same time not abandon the plot, the storyline and the Characters on screen. Suraj Sharma's performance will keep you at the edge of your sit the whole movie... even better the "Richard Parker" The Bengali Tiger the young boy got stranded with.

A story about believing, religions, family, relationships, added with a Fantastic creativity and visual remarks from Ang Lee and all his Technical Team who has developed a Neat Cinematographic Masterpiece.... hence it shouldn't be any surprise for anyone if Ang Lee takes the Trophy for Best Directing at the Academy Award, on a night that it 'supposed' to be for Steven Spielberg... however the Winning Director at the end, is not even Nominated (Ben Affleck - Argo).

Like a said on my Facebook status yesterday after watched the movie:
Life of Pi: it's mandatory to see this movie, I think Ang Lee may ruin Steven Spielberg's night.
Score: 10.0/10 - Grade: A+
